From Hodgepodge to Future-Focused Through Small (and Affordable) A/V Upgrades at Scale
The College of Engineering at The Ohio State University went from 11 departmental IT offices to a centralized resource in 2015. With that change brought opportunities and…a lot of different ecosystems. With over 200 learning environments in various states of dismay, a budget deficit that halted all new project work from 2020 to Spring of 2024, and the changing needs of our faculty and students around Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) we are left with both a multi-million dollar problem and a big opportunity to make a difference.
Enter wireless casting devices to convert aging rooms into BYOD hybrid powerhouses! While not a replacement for an entire room overhaul, we discovered that we could consolidate from an ecosystem of multiple casting options (Airmedia, Solstice, Via, Clickshare, etc) into one single affordable device –Screenbeam. This device can be set up easily over a single ethernet connection or a wireless network for spaces without the infrastructure. Almost half of our spaces have moved over to this solution, with great success. We will talk through the administration, deployment, messaging, and training as well as highlight the opportunities and pitfalls for others. So many benefits, so little cost.
